《三袋米》电影根据武汉作家王恒绩的同名小说改编。该小说取材王恒绩的家乡——湖北省红安县的一个真实感人故事：上世纪八十年代初，稻子连续遭遇稻瘟病，庄稼歉收。一位身患多种疾病的寡娘，含辛茹苦地供儿子读书。儿子考上了重点高中后，每月要给学校交30斤米。这30斤米从此就像30座大山压在母亲身上。在目睹母亲遭遇逼债的窘况下，懂事的儿子撕了录取通知书，决意打工养家，被母亲一巴掌打到了学校，同时也将失去劳动能力的母亲逼上了讨饭的路。女人虽弱，为母则强。母亲瞒着儿子和乡亲，天没亮就出门到很远的城镇讨饭，夜里黑透了才回家，讨饭路上遭狗咬，被人骂，饥餐渴饮，历尽千般苦，总算保证了儿子的供米。她将讨来的米送到学校食堂，因是杂色米，不知内情的学校勉强收了两袋后，第三袋再也不收了。母亲无奈，跪在地上哭着说出了真相，震惊了学校领导，也震惊了偶遇母亲讨米的乡亲们，大家纷纷出手援救...
